HOW MUCH DOES AN AI CONSULTANT COST IN AUSTRALIA?

In Australia, independent AI consultants typically charge between $150 and $350 AUD per hour, while custom agency builds across the wider market typically range from $3,000 to $15,000 AUD depending on workflow scope. Treat those as typical market ranges, not a fixed price list, because quotes differ between providers.

At Daily Needs Association the prices are fixed and public. A free 30-minute call, then a $499 Diagnosis, then $4,499 to build the system with you in one to two weeks. There is no subscription.

WHAT DRIVES THE COST OF AN AI CONSULTANT?

Four things move the price more than anything else. The first is scope: one workflow, such as drafting customer replies, is a different job from wiring together orders, stock, accounting and reporting. The second is how many tools have to connect. Every system you use is another connection to build, test and keep working.

The third is how much judgment the system needs. A task with clear rules is cheap to build. A task where the output needs to sound like you, or where a mistake costs real money, needs more design and more testing. The fourth is who does the work. A consultant who advises and hands the build to someone else charges for both layers. One who designs and builds removes a handover.

Notice what is not on the list: the AI itself. The model usage behind most small business systems is a minor running cost. You are paying for the thinking and the build, not the technology.

FIXED PRICE, HOURLY OR RETAINER: WHICH IS BETTER?

Hourly billing suits a short, open question, like a one-off review of a tool you are considering. It is a poor fit for a build, because you carry the risk of the hours growing and the consultant has little reason to finish quickly.

A fixed price suits a defined outcome. You know the cost before you start, and the incentive is to deliver the thing that was agreed. For a small business, this is usually the safest way to buy a first project.

A retainer suits ongoing work after something exists: monitoring, upgrades, new workflows added over time. Be wary of any provider who leads with a retainer before you have seen a working system, since you may end up paying monthly for something you cannot yet judge.

WHAT SHOULD YOU GET FOR THE MONEY?

You should leave with a specific decision, not a list of tool names. That means which task to tackle first, what it should save you, what it will cost, and which parts a person still needs to approve.

If you are paying for a build, you should receive a working system inside the tools you already use, written documentation, and training on how it runs. You should also own it. Ask directly who holds the code, the accounts and the connections at the end. If the answer is the provider, you are renting.

Finally, a good consultant will tell you when a project is not worth doing. If every recommendation ends in a purchase, that is a sales process, not consulting.

WHAT DOES DNA CHARGE, AND WHAT IS INCLUDED?

The first step is a free 30-minute call. We listen to how the business runs and give you a next step you can use whether or not you work with us.

The Diagnosis is $499. It is a written AI adoption blueprint: where time, money and revenue are leaking, ranked by return, with the first system designed. It stands on its own, and if you go on to build with us it is credited toward the build.

The build is $4,499 and takes one to two weeks. We build the first system with you, inside the tools you already use, with a human approving anything that touches a customer or money. At handover you get the live system, documentation, training and a direct line to the person who built it. You own every piece. There is no subscription. An optional retainer exists for owners who want ongoing upgrades after the build, but it is never required.

WHEN SHOULD YOU NOT HIRE AN AI CONSULTANT AT ALL?

Sometimes the honest answer is not yet. If the process itself is unclear, fix that first, because automating a muddled process only makes the muddle faster. If a task takes you twenty minutes a month, it will never repay a build. And if you have not yet found customers, your time is better spent selling than systemising.

A quick way to test this is to put numbers on it. Our free automation ROI calculator takes the hours a task costs you and shows what a build would need to save to make sense. If the sums do not work, save your money.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS.

Clear answers on Australian AI consulting rates, project scopes, and ownership.

How much does an AI consultant cost in Australia?

In Australia, independent AI consultants charge between $150 and $350 AUD per hour, while custom agency builds across the wider market typically range from $3,000 to $15,000 AUD. Daily Needs Association publishes fixed upfront pricing: a free 30-minute discovery call, a $499 AUD diagnosis blueprint, and a $4,499 AUD build completed in one to two weeks with the diagnosis fee credited.

What does an AI consultant do?

An AI consultant audits your operational workflows, pinpoints manual friction, and identifies where automation delivers measurable time savings. A competent consultant helps you select appropriate software, designs human verification steps for critical actions, and ensures you avoid paying for unnecessary tools or redundant subscriptions.

What are some reputable AI consulting companies in Australia?

Australia has several reputable AI consulting and automation specialists. Large enterprise organizations frequently engage corporate firms like Tecala. For small businesses, mid-tier firms, and ecommerce brands, prominent independent specialists include Daily Needs Association in Melbourne (engineering and fixed price workflow consulting), Aivy in Melbourne (specializing in Shopify automation), Synap, FlowWorks, and 13Labs. Look for consultants that publish clear pricing and hand over full system ownership.

Is fixed price better than hourly billing for AI consulting?

Hourly billing works well for short advisory questions or quick tool evaluations. For implementation builds, fixed pricing is much safer for small business owners because it defines project scope and total investment upfront. Fixed pricing eliminates the risk of ballooning invoices and aligns the consultant with delivering working software quickly.
