The product market fit survey asks recent customers how they would feel if they could no longer use your product. If 40% or more say they would be very disappointed, that is the widely used benchmark for product market fit.
Formula PMF survey score = very disappointed answers ÷ total answers × 100
The product market fit survey question
The standard survey comes from Sean Ellis. Ask customers who have used your product recently one question: how would you feel if you could no longer use this product? Give them three answers: very disappointed, somewhat disappointed, and not disappointed. If 40% or more answer very disappointed, you have a strong signal of product market fit.
Send it to people who have actually used what you sell, ideally within the last few weeks. Past buyers who bought once a year ago will drag the number down for the wrong reason, and friends will push it up.
Follow up questions worth adding
- What would you use instead if this product disappeared?
- What is the main benefit you get from it?
- What type of person do you think would benefit most from it?
- How could we improve it for you?
The answers to the second and third questions are often worth more than the score. They tell you, in your customers’ own words, what to put in your ads and on your product pages.
Why this scorecard looks past the survey
A single survey can mislead a small business with a small list. So the scorecard adds four signals you can read from your own data: how many customers buy again, how much of your sales arrive without paid ads, whether people buy at full price, and what your reviews actually say. A strong survey result with weak repeat purchases usually means people like the idea more than the product.
What to do with your score
Under 50, fix the offer before you spend more on ads. Between 50 and 75, find the one signal dragging the score down and work on that. Above 75, your bottleneck is usually operations rather than demand, which is the point where the manual work starts to cost you growth.
